Why we love it

What can we say? We're smitten with a salted caramel truffle. These are the kind of "Oops, there goes the whole box" chocolate treats that make you wish you never had to share them. But it's pretty fun when you do. After all, no chocolate-lover wants to be alone in their joy once they've discovered their new favorite. Maybe this one will be yours.

How it does good

Elevating chocolate and the standards for producing it

Cocoa farming poses a big risk for environmental damage, forced labor, and child labor. Alter Eco has set out to make a difference in the chocolate world by putting an end to these dangerous and destructive practices. Every single product Alter Eco produces is sourced directly from small-scale farmers. They go beyond the Fair Trade pay standards by providing their partners with targeted assistance with food security, biodiversity, and gender equality. They've committed to compostable, non-toxic wrappers and have been carbon neutral since 2009.

  • responsible sourcing

Alter Eco pays their farmers 1.3x (33% more) the standard Fair Trade payment. They also help cocoa farmers transition their land to dynamic agroforestry, training over 400 farmers in dynamic agroforestry since 2015.
  • low carbon footprint

Founder Tristan Lecomte pioneered a method of integrating carbon offsetting within the company's own supply chain to improve soil conditions, biodiversity and crop health, all while making them carbon neutral since 2009.
  • recyclable packaging

The company has committed to using 100% compostable or recyclable packaging by the end of 2020. As a part of the OSC2 Packaging Collaborative, a leading sustainable packaging innovation, they've been working since 2013 on removing petroleum-based plastic from our landfills, oceans, and planet.
  • supporting key causes

Not only does Alter Eco give their employees 3 paid days off a year to support causes of their choice, they also make regular cash and product donations to the organizations their team members are passionate about. These include clean-ups, food services, building green spaces in urban neighborhoods, supporting events for Earth Day and MLK Day, and contributing to Imperfect Produce and SF Recology.

How to use it

Share, don't share—we don't judge. Just enjoy them. We definitely do.

When you're done...

The box, if clean and dry, is curbside recyclable. The wrappers are home compostable.

These are general guidelines for broadly-recyclable materials. Check with your local recycler to confirm what they take.
