Bob's Red Mill

When we think desert island, we think coconuts, but when we think desert-island foods, we think this comforting, slightly smoky sugar, gorgeously caramel-colored and just the right amount of sweet.

Sustainable goodness

Bob's Red Mill is 100% employee-owned, and they've founded research centers to study nutrition's role in disease prevention.

Why we love it

Beginning as tree sap, then boiled down to full-bodied, golden-brown perfection, the process behind this delicate coconut sugar is a lot like the process behind maple syrup, resulting in a rich taste like a toasted brown sugar. Fluffy and robust, with a tantalizing hint of caramel sweetness, it’s a sugar alternative that has a lower glycemic index than the table kind, and might just outshine the original.

How it does good

Inspired by the past, looking to the future

Wheat has been a staple since the early days of civilization, and stone-milling didn't come far behind, rising to prominence in Ancient Rome. While much of modern flour production uses high-temperature roller mills to speed up the manufacturing process, Bob’s Red Mill thinks, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” committing to a slow, steady, stone-milling process that maintains flavor, texture, and nutrients. Their commitment to time-tested techniques makes them a household name in health food, but it doesn’t mean they’re stuck in the past. They’re breaking tradition with non-GMO ingredients; an expansive catalogue of gluten- and allergen-free, and vegan products; and a groundbreaking Employee Stock Ownership Plan. They also support social justice through the NAACP.

  • supporting key causes

Bob's Red Mill supports No Kid Hungry and Oregon Food Bank, donating funds and food to address food insecurity in their community and beyond. They've also founded multiple research centers, including The Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition and Preventive Health at Oregon State University, which work to study and enhance the health impacts of nutrition and food education.
  • responsible sourcing

Only 8,000 businesses in the USA are 100% employee-owned, and Bob's Red Mill is proud to be one of them. They're committed to sourcing everything they can from organic, non-GMO producers in North America.
  • low carbon footprint

Bob’s Red Mill uses on-site renewable energy with a 120 kW solar system, and they have partnered with Energy Trust of Oregon to improve energy efficiency in their operations. They also upcycle rescued mill scrap as local animal feed.
  • BPA Free

About the Brand

Bob's Red Mill

Bob's Red Mill

Bob and Charlee met on a blind date in 1952. It was Charlee who first inspired the couple’s whole grain adventure when she decided to create a healthier life for her family by feeding them wholesome, natural foods and whole grains. Charlee was a fixture in the original Bob’s Red Mill store and took on many roles in the early days, including packaging products by hand. Bob immersed himself in the ancient art of stone milling, researching historic mills and contacting dozens of people and companies in his quest to locate millstones and other flour-making equipment.

I love this coconut sugar. It’s sweet but not overly sweet. It’s delicious! I put it in my coffee, on my yogurt and I cook with it too. I highly recommend.
