How it does good
Rethinking how we make chocolate
TCHO was born over 15 years ago out of a shared vision to reimagine the world of chocolate, from the ground up. They go beyond just purchasing cacao from origins; they also partner with farmers and invest in their resources, so they can co-create better cacao, together. TCHO makes all their chocolate at their state-of-the-art factory (like Willy Wonka, but better) in Berkeley, California, and is always looking for new ways to use their business to better the world through chocolate.
TCHO Source is TCHO's unique program for partnering with cacao producers and research institutions worldwide to create a better cacao bean, because better cacao means better chocolate and a better industry. And it's not just about the quality and taste of the cacao beans; it's how they're grown, harvested, roasted, and moved along every point along the supply chain—beginning to end and everything in between. A highlight of the TCHO Source program is the TCHO Flavor Lab, a mini bean-to-bar chocolate-making lab where farmers can take cacao beans they grow and make chocolate from them on the spot. When a partner farmer hits TCHO's high standards on quality, they pay the farmer a TCHO Quality Premium on top of the fair trade and organic premiums they already pay.

TCHO has donated $10,000 annually to the African Cocoa Initiative II, a project focused on improving West African cocoa supply chains. In addition, most of their suppliers are small-scale family farmers that they've partnered with through long-standing relationships, educational opportunities, and financial assistance.

One of the main reasons TCHO is where it is today is because of Brad Kintzer, the Chief Chocolate Maker, expert taster, and industry leader in cacao sensory analysis. He's led TCHO's chocolate-making for over a decade and has helped pioneer new systems that allow TCHO to put quality first—for the benefit of the chocolate, the cacao farmers, and the planet we call home.
