Dark chocolate chips are the underdogs of the dessert world. Most people are hung up on sweet, but these rich, cocoa forward little bits are ready to change your mind.

Why we love it

Dark chocolate is daring. It's bold. It knows exactly who it is. But just because these dark chocolate chips are coming to your kitchen chock full of confidence, doesn't mean you need to be intimidated. You can bake with them just like their semi-sweet sister chip. Add them to double chocolate chip cookies, sprinkle them on top of brownies, or melt them down over some almonds.

How it does good

A closer connection between people and farmers

The tea, cocoa, and coffee farming industries are at the highest risk for worker exploitation and contributing to deforestation. For standard brands, these supply chains are notoriously lacking in transparency. That’s why Equal Exchange created a fair trade model that cuts out the middleman. Instead, they focus on direct, transparent trade with farmers and cooperatives. They work in collaboration with Root Capital and other organizations to help build farmer cooperative training programs. A USAID partner, Equal Exchange is heavily engaged in farmer cooperative capacity development, bringing technical assistance to in-country growers to help increase productivity, reliability and ultimately success in a global market.

  • supporting key causes

Equal Exchange donates 10% of their annual profits to organizations that align with their mission. They also direct grants to farmer cooperatives to work on projects ranging from investing in coffee tree nurseries to creating beekeeping collectives for farmers so they can diversify their crops and income.
  • responsible sourcing

By using fair and direct trade practices along with organic farms, Equal Exchange makes sure their supply chains are creating a better place for people and the planet.
  • low carbon footprint

Equal Exchange uses solar panels on their roasting facility to offset part of their energy use. By partnering with local farmers and gardeners, they turn used burlap bags and chaff from the roasting process into useful growing material. Plus, they compost in their offices.

How to use it

You can make dark chocolate fudge with just a bag of these and a can of sweetened condensed milk. Walnuts are optional.

When you're done...

These are general guidelines for broadly-recyclable materials. Check with your local recycler to confirm what they take.

About the Brand

Equal Exchange

Equal Exchange

The three founders of Equal Exchange came together with a shared vision in mind: fairness to farmers, and a closer connection between farmers and consumers. There is so much care and expertise from farmers that go into products, and in most supply chains, this is often overlooked. Equal Exchange's fair trade products are taking a stance and creating a difference for farmers, economy, and the planet.

The Best Chocolate Chips

These chocolate chips taste so good. There wasn’t much difference to me in the taste between the semi sweet in the bitter sweet. They had a real nice clean taste.

Equal Exchange Bittersweet Chocolate Chips

These are the best, especially if you like your chocolate very dark. And fair trade, too. What's not to like? Nobody does it better.

Rich, dark flavor!

Beautiful dark bitter flavor! I used these in S'Mores melted in the oven with a marshmallow and a graham cracker, and that pairing was pretty great! I've been looking for ethically sourced chocolate chips, and these fit the bill!
