Farmer Direct Organic

Not only are these split lentils delicious, they cook faster than their sibling: whole red lentils. That means a crowd-pleasing dinner comes together in a snap.

Why we love it

On chilly winter days, we find ourselves reaching for these split red lentils. They make a splendid, protein-packed base for soups, stews, and bowls. But believe it or not, the flavor isn't the only thing that sold us on these lentils. We're equally as jazzed about their story. Farmer Direct Organic partners with organic farms, cutting out the middle man, which helps workers get paid fairly. So every time you go to make a crowd-pleasing soup, you can feel good about the ingredients.

How it does good

Treating farmers, families, and the planet with equal respect

Jason Freeman was running a small hempseed food company when he discovered the economic stress that farmers are under. The lack of price transparency shortchanges farmers, and Jason wasn’t having any of it. He founded Farmer Direct Organic to help make practices more transparent for everyone. Today, Farmer Direct Organic is on a mission to make our food future beneficial to all living things and our planet at large. All of their products are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs, and they work with Organic Trade Solutions to ensure ethical and sustainable handling across their supply chain.

  • responsible sourcing

Instead of exploiting farmers to make a profit, Farmer Direct Organic cuts out the middle man, and in turn, pays farmers fairly for their organic, non-GMO crops.
  • low carbon footprint

Farmer Direct Organic works with Organic Trade Solutions to ensure safe, ethical, and environmentally conscious handling across their supply chain.

How to use it

Throw these lentils in a soup, stew, or a delicious dal (our personal favorite).

When you're done...

Plastic bags should be sent to TerraCycle using our special instructions.

These are general guidelines for broadly-recyclable materials. Check with your local recycler to confirm what they take.

About the Brand

Farmer Direct Organic

Farmer Direct Organic

Farmer Direct Organic began as Farmer Direct Organic Co-op. Founded by Jason Freeman in 2002, the organization was formed to help drive price transparency for organic farmers in the Great Plains and Prairies. The original co-op changed the game overnight, and soon other buyers began delivering better, more transparent pricing to the farmers as well. Although it's a separate business today, Farm Direct Organic continues to buy certified Tested Glyphosate Free grains from the farmers of the co-op who are always 100% organic, 100% farmer-owned, and fair. And from day one, Farmer Direct Organic has been committed to operating with uncompromising quality and transparency.

I bought this because I work at a food pantry with ME clients. They seem to love it, but it is too expensive for us to stock all the time.
