Grey Ghost Bakery

If you've ever had a slice of Derby pie, you'll recognize the flavors in this southern classic. Chocolate, pecans, and smooth bourbon undertones—this is easily our favorite cookie from Grey Ghost Bakery.

Sustainable goodness

Grey Ghost Bakery sources their ingredients from fair trade, organic farms that use sustainable and regenerative farming techniques.

Why we love it

Usually you'd have to go south to find flavors like this. Reminiscent of a southern Derby pie, these pecan-packed treats from Grey Ghost Bakery get a kick from smooth bourbon. The chocolate adds a rich, slightly bitter taste to balance out the out-of-this-world sweetness. We like to eat them after dinner with a shot of espresso (or two fingers or bourbon), but there's no "right time" to enjoy such mouth-watering flavor.

How it does good

Cookies made the right way, not the easy way

Cookies are made with a few main ingredients: flour, sugar, butter, and eggs. But how these ingredients are farmed and manufactured isn’t always kind to people, animals, or the planet. Because of this, Grey Ghost Bakery chooses to source organic, fair trade ingredients and—whenever possible—ingredients that are made in the U.S. They also keep the planet in mind when choosing their packaging (and how they dispose of their packaging). All of the material for their cookie boxes is sourced in the U.S. and they recycle as much of their production waste as possible. This helps them lower their carbon footprint and helps keep trash out of landfills.

  • responsible sourcing

While it would be cheaper for Grey Ghost Bakery to purchase their ingredients from conventional farms, they choose to work with fair trade, organic farms instead. They also source their packaging material from U.S. distributors who pay their workers fairly.

How to use it

Rich chocolate and a smooth bourbon finish make these cookies a delectable treat to enjoy with tea—or a bourbon on the rocks.

When you're done...

The chipboard box is recyclable in your curbside bin. The plastic tray and acrylic wrapper should be sent to TerraCycle by following our special instructions.

These are general guidelines for broadly-recyclable materials. Check with your local recycler to confirm what they take.

What I Could Taste Was Delicious

These arrived in a million pieces and the entire box was smashed but that is no fault of Hive. That's on Fed Ex. I ate what I could salvage and loved the flavor. It's a soft cookie and for me, the chocolate and bourbon both came through but no pecan. I only know they were supposed to have them because I read the ingredients. Actual pecans would have taken this cookie over the top and made it 5 stars.

Chocolate Bourbon Cookies - anything, but

Truly, these were quite odd tasting. I am a fan of everything bourbon flavored, however, in this case neither chocolate nor bourbon were very discernible. More of a mashup of something. Filling yes, worth a try? Absolutely not.

Special occasion cookies

These cookies are just amazing. Deeply chocolatey with a rich bourbon taste, and just the right level of chewiness. They're a little too dear and unusual to be an everyday type of cookie but they're awesome as a special treat.
