Why we love it

Some veggie broths are way too high in sodium, and this is a great alternative. Low in sodium, without sugar or additives, it's great on its own as a broth, or for enhancing flavor in any recipe. One carton makes about 2.25 gallons of broth, but it also lasts for a long time on the shelf without spoiling, making this a pretty useful pantry staple to have on hand.

How it does good

Saving veggies from the landfill

Tons of perfectly fine veggies often go uneaten, either because they look imperfect, or no one wants to use up the scraps. Matriark Foods takes in all that surplus to make nourishing, low-sodium broth bases. Because so much good stuff shouldn't go to waste.

  • responsible sourcing

Matriark Foods works with farmers to make use of veggies that would otherwise go to waste in the fields. They also work with food service providers to use up fresh-cut leftovers from their food prep.
  • recyclable packaging

Matriark Foods' cartons are curbside recyclable.
  • low carbon footprint

All ingredients are used and there is no waste in Matriark's production. One 7.4 oz carton diverts about a third of a pound of food waste from landfills, and reduces greenhouse gases by 1lb.
  • supporting key causes

As a member of 1% for the Planet, Matriark contributes at least 1% of their annual sales, product, and volunteer time to organizations with environmental causes. In 2020, they supported Glynwood, a center for regional food and farming that works to advance regenerative agriculture.

How to use it

Make a delicious ramen broth with some garlic, onion, soy sauce, ginger, and miso paste. Serve with noodles and your favorite veggies. Top off with a soft-boiled egg.

When you're done...

Good news! Rinse the carton, replace the cap, and recycle the whole thing in a curbside bin. Or, feel free to put the cap in your TerraCycle envelope.

These are general guidelines for broadly-recyclable materials. Check with your local recycler to confirm what they take.
