How it does good
A global family business serving the global family
Tea-making is hardly as simple (or as soothing) as pouring water into a cup. Deforestation, water shortages, and threats to biodiversity are all results of less ethical tea-based agriculture. Numi, a brother-sister team based in Oakland, is out to change that, with environmental practices focused on making great, flavorful tea while protecting land and employees. They cut out pesticides, fertilizers, and machine picking that impact taste, farmland, and the workers who handle them. They also use practices that sustain ecological harmony and send out their products in compostable bags and wrappers. The word “Numi” refers to an Iraqi drink, symbolic of hospitality and community. True to its name, Numi is introducing new, global tastes and new, globally protective practices with their tea.
