Around 8000 BC, hemp played a part in both food and pottery, popping up in North American paper-making in the late 1600s. Even good ol' George Washington was a hemp grower, so you could say these shelled seeds are both quite regal and a culinary work of art. Whether you're crossing the Delaware or just want to toss something on your smoothie or salad, this crunchy, nutty hempseed totally has your back.

Half an avocado (or two), and top it with cut veggies, hummus, tahini, and a sprinkling of seeds. And we thought we couldn't do better than avaocado toast.

How it does good

More often than not, mass production is more interested in making a lot of food than nourishing the environment, community, and individuals food comes from. The result is planetary harm, unfair labor practices, and little benefit to the people in the cogs of the machine. Nutiva isn't afraid to say there's a better way. As a corporation, they believe they're obligated to lead the way forward. In addition to sourcing only organic and non-GMO ingredients, they support regenerative practices, from pesticide-/herbicide-free growing to carbon farming. This includes using only sustainable palm oil, which limits habitat destruction. They also advocate for producer and consumer rights, and food education. Their employees are paid to volunteer at food banks, beach clean-ups, and more.

Hempseed Happiness

Nutiva hempseed is the best I've tried. I use them in everything from smoothies to salads and even sprinkle them on pancakes/waffles or on top of baked goods before popping into the oven. They add a deliciously subtle nutty flavor and are packed with protein and Omegas.
