Why we love it

What happened to chocolate? This question has kept us up at night for years. All of those more-milk-than-chocolate varieties that line our grocer's shelves made us think there must be a better way. Turns out, the Mayans had it down pat. Their stone ground method stays true to cacao, letting its wonderful intensity and diverse flavor profile sing. Taza takes that age old tradition and makes it modern with their chocolate bark. Each piece is packed with our favorite ingredients: flakes of coconut, crushed almonds, and of course, sugar. Sometimes, we forgo using our hands altogether and just raise the bag to our face.

How it does good

From farm to factory: Taza does things the right way

While visiting Oaxaca, Mexico, Alex Whitmore tasted stone ground chocolate for the first time. It was love at first bite, and he knew: he wanted in on the chocolate-making game. But as he dug into the trading and processing practices, Alex was disheartened. Cocoa trading is a booming industry, but farmers and workers at the bottom of the chain don’t feel that same financial “boom.” When Alex started Taza, he committed to transparency every step of the way. Farmers are treated as partners, and Taza shares their success by giving back to local charities.

    Taza says no to opaque supply chains and low-grade cacao. Instead, they source organic, fair trade cacao, paying farmers a fair wage for their labor.

Taza Chocolate

Taza founder and CEO Alex Whitmore took his first bite of stone ground chocolate while traveling in Oaxaca, Mexico. He was so inspired by the rustic intensity that he decided to create a chocolate factory back home in Somerville, MA. Alex apprenticed under a molinero in Oaxaca to learn how to hand-carve granite mill stones to make a new kind of American chocolate that is simply crafted, but seriously good. In 2005, he officially launched Taza with his wife, Kathleen Fulton, who is Taza's Chief Design Officer and designed all of the packaging. Taza is a pioneer in ethical cacao sourcing and was the first U.S. chocolate maker to establish a third-party certified Direct Trade Cacao Certification program.
