How it does good
Making tea kinder for the environment
There’s a big problem with our little tea bags. While tea bags can be a convenient option for tea time, most of them are made with plastic and nylon-based fibers, which in turn contributes to our world's massive waste problem. This is why Alaya is committed to the freshest loose leaf teas, ordered seasonally and in small batches. They directly source all of their teas and herbals from organic, biodynamic, and regenerative farms that have additional certifications on top of USDA organic: Demeter Certified Biodynamic for their tea estates and Regenerative Organic Certified for their herbals.
Alaya Tea sources from organic and biodynamic farms where tea pickers and workers are treated kindly. Picked fresh and sent in small batches, their loose leaf teas celebrate simple and pure ingredients, free of added flavorings, fragrances, and preservatives. Alaya also works with farms that are growing teas with methods that retain the soil and combat climate change like planting trees to prevent landslides and runoff and leaving areas for forestry. All of their teas come from Fair Trade certified farms, and all of their herbals come from Fair For Life farms.
Learn MoreAlaya Tea works closely with their suppliers, keeping up to date on the carbon content in their soil to determine the long-term impact of organic, regenerative farming. While more research needs to be done to see how impactful this style of farming is, it's been found to be better at storing carbon in soil, thereby helping to offset greenhouse gases.
Learn MoreThis past December, Alaya Tea launched a campaign that donated 10% of their tea sales for the month to Aarohi, a NGO at the base of the Himalayas, that supports female farmers in the region. As they grow, Alaya Tea is hoping to increase their involvement with the communities they source from through more initiatives that support women in agriculture. They’ve also donated a variety of Alaya Tea's products directly to healthcare workers, Tasveer, a non-profit highlighting South Asian arts and culture, and Roux, a Portland-based platform creating space for marginalized voices in food and beverage.
Learn MoreAlaya Tea’s packaging is fully plastic-free and compostable (ink and the labels too), complete with a bio-based zipper closure, water-based adhesive, and even a biodegradable shipping mailer.

About the Brand
Alaya Tea
Alaya Tea is an Indian women-owned loose leaf tea company that sources organic and biodynamic teas from planet-friendly farms in India. Their name comes from "Himalaya," a region that grows some of the finest teas in the world.
After growing up on a daily ritual of drinking chai, traveling in the Himalayan region, and visiting small farmers and tea estates, co-founders Esha Chhabra and Smita Satiani wanted to build a company that would respect these communities and address the environmental challenges of agriculture.
Today, Alaya Tea’s mission is to invest in Indian farmers who are pioneering the organic and regenerative movement, celebrate women that are the backbone of the tea industry, and elevate tea-drinking culture in the United States.
