The new-thing-you'll-learn-today is that Sardine Season is July - April in the Northeast Atlantic. That's when these fish are sustainably harvested and then canned with single origin extra virign olive oil and hot peppers. Spicy, meet salty.

We are obsessed with the conservas tradition - if you've traveled in Europe you may have seen shops with beautiful boxes or printed tins stacked floor to ceiling like a combination of Jenga and a mosaic. Created as a way to feed sailors fish without risking food poisoning, this pantry staple takes responsibly sourced seafood and preserves it through canning. That means you getting super fresh fish that's ready to eat any time. Some are canned with other ingredients like preserved lemon, spicy chili sauce, garlic or hot chilis, while others let the fish shine on its own. That the boxes are gorgeous is an added feast for your eyes.

Ingredient Integrity

From wild-caught MSC-certified tuna to Fair Trade-certified salmon, Fishwife works with responsibly-managed fisheries to improve ocean health, reduce pressure on wild fish populations, and minimize bycatch. Their fish meets EPA recommendations for safer seafood, and their rainbow trout has 62x less mercury than the FDA’s allowable standard. Fishwife's products do not contain ingredients on Hive's No Good, Dirty Rotten list of banned and watch list ingredients.

Responsible Production

Well-managed fisheries, especially small pelagic fishes like anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, emit less carbon than terrestrial animal proteins, and the shelf-stability of canned seafood helps reduce food waste. Fishwife's products are hand-packed by family-run and First Nations-owned canneries who have perfected their artisanal processes over generations.

Clean Packaging

Fishwife's gorgeous packaging is composed of easily-recyclable paperboard boxes and BPA-free aluminum or steel cans. They prioritize recyclable materials throughout their supply chain and avoid plastic.

Fishwife

Fishwife cofounder, Becca Millstein, and her small but mighty team, are on a mission to make ethically-sourced, premium tinned seafood as much of a staple in US pantries as it is in Europe.

What's a "fishwife", you ask? Originally it was an umbrella term for the wives and daughters of fishermen you'd find at a market, it's since evolved into an insult for brash and foul-mouthed women, which Becca chooses to wear as a badge of honor (editor's note: us too!).
