Hive Five™ Certified
No need to guess what's in your food or how it was made. Our experts vet every product for ingredient integrity, responsible sourcing, and great taste using our own criteria called the Hive Five.
Ingredient
Integrity
Numi supports their farmers and producers with Fair Trade Certification and Fair Labor Verification. Fair Trade standards encourage farmers to use environmentally friendly practices, such as developing nutrient-rich soils, using less toxic pesticides, and sourcing water sustainably, in addition to ensuring that farmers are paid above market rates for their crops, allowing them to invest in their communities. Additionally, by choosing Organic ingredients (which are always non-GMO), Numi is prioritizing soil health and avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which may reduce the overall amount and bioavailability of heavy metals. Numi's products do not contain ingredients on Hive's No Good, Dirty Rotten list of banned and watch list ingredients.
Responsible Production
Numi achieved Climate Neutral certification in 2020.
Clean Packaging
In 2020, they introduced a first-of-its-kind, plant-based wrapper, made with sugarcane and eucalyptus to be industrially compostable. They are made from sustainably grown FSC® certified paper, and lined with sugarcane-based Non-GMO PLA and metalized eucalyptus layers to ensure freshness. They have been tested to make sure they completely disintegrate and cause no eco-toxicity when they break down.
Leading Change
The Numi Foundation donates fresh fruits and vegetables to food-insecure families and works with communities for long-term access to drinking water and sanitation.
Rave Worthy
Our team personally tests every product to make sure it’s good enough to end up in your home, not a landfill.

How it does goodTea-making is hardly as simple (or as soothing) as pouring water into a cup. Deforestation, water shortages, and threats to biodiversity are all results of less ethical tea-based agriculture. Numi, a brother-sister team based in Oakland, is out to change that, with environmental practices focused on making great, flavorful tea while protecting land and employees. They cut out pesticides, fertilizers, and machine picking that impact taste, farmland, and the workers who handle them. They also use practices that sustain ecological harmony and send out their products in compostable bags and wrappers. The word "Numi" refers to an Iraqi drink, symbolic of hospitality and community. True to its name, Numi is introducing new, global tastes and new, globally protective practices with their tea.

Numi
Numi was founded in 1999 in Oakland, California by brother and sister Ahmed Rahim and Reem Hassani with a vision to share the transformative, healing power of tea with the world. They named their company after the steeped dried desert lime they drank in their early childhood in Baghdad, Iraq. The drink symbolizes hospitality and community (numi means “citrus” in Arabic). Creative, conscious change-makers, they have introduced little-known herbs and teas to the United States, while advancing human rights and sustainable causes around the globe.
