Big Spoon Roasters

This butter is all about the perfect blend—of chai spices, of almonds and peanuts, and of you with this jar. Featured in Bon Appétit and O, The Oprah Magazine this is a nut butter worth writing home about.

Why we love it

Close your eyes and imagine a world where your nut butter is packed with both peanuts and almonds. Now add a little chai spice to that. Now open your eyes and rejoice because we live in that world. As chai lovers and nut butter lovers, we were impressed with this one. Full, rich flavor, lightly sweet, the distinct chai taste you know and love—it's all waiting right under the lid with this one.

How it does good

Starting from scratch and building something better

Nut butters can be made with very simple ingredients. Namely the nuts themselves. When it comes to farming them, Big Spoon Roasters has committed to responsible sourcing. Mark Overbay, the founder, was inspired to create his nut butters after spending time in Zimbabwe. There, he learned to honor simple ingredients and bring care into everything he makes. By using trusted, transparent farms and producers that share their philosophy, Big Spoon makes it clear that their relationships with suppliers are honest and long-lasting. Doing this means both the farmers and Big Spoon can help each other by collectively growing the demand for higher quality, sustainable agriculture. Today, Big Spoon makes their delicious nut butters in Durham, NC. They also work with Bee Friendly Certified almond growers in California along with domestic pecan farmers in Georgia, ginger farmers in Fiji, sorghum farmers in Tennessee, and more partners that ensure freshness, flavor, and quality.

  • recyclable packaging

Every nut butter jar is fully recyclable, and so are the bar boxes. Plus, the labels are printed with non-toxic ink.
  • supporting key causes

Big Spoon supports non-profit organizations that cover environmental conservation, wildlife habitat preservation, animal rights, human rights, hunger relief, literacy, education for the underprivileged, physical fitness, eating disorder recovery, and sustainable agriculture.
  • responsible sourcing

As Good Food Guild members and founding members of their local Living Wage business community, Big Spoon cares a lot about responsible sourcing. Although they source their organic cashews from farms in Vietnam, they're processed at SMETA-audited facilities to ensure high standards.

Sugar and Spice and almost everything Nice

Well, I love the flavor - it makes my taste buds bloom with delight! But, I failed to look at the ingredients before purchasing. :-( So, when I received it and saw that sugar is way up on the list of ingredients, second just after the nuts, I was annoyed and disillusioned. Furthermore, the next ingredient is honey (just another form of sugar.) Pure stevia would work just as well here as a substitute for the processed sugar, as there are so many flavors that would overcome any bitterness that the stevia might leave behind. Too many manufacturers and retailers are adding far too much sugar to the products they market and sell to consumers. And the soaring rates of diabetes, arthritis, osteoarthritis, cancer, etc... is a reflection of that abuse. I know you would agree. Unfortunately, I know all to well the politics and the **** influences of the sugar industry so I don't expect any changes in this regard. Ciao!

If you like chai, you'll love this spread

Hi! Brenda from the Hive team here. This nut butter is so delicious and flavorful. My favorite breakfast meal is scooping a tablespoon of this in with greek yogurt and a few slices of mango.
