How it does good
All-in-one aluminum
Step aside, plastic. Open Water only uses aluminum to package their water. Aluminum drink containers are recycled more than twice as often as plastic, glass, and cartons. Plus, aluminum recycling is a closed loop. That means the material from one bottle can go right back into making another one. As the country’s only certified Climate Neutral water brand, Open Water donates a portion of every sale to help clean up our oceans and keep them free of plastic.
Open Water is made of recycled material, with around 73% recycled aluminum in every bottle and can.
Learn MoreOpen Water is the only Climate Neutral certified water brand in North America. They offset all emissions by investing in projects that take carbon out of the atmosphere.
Learn MoreAs a member of 1% for the Planet, Open Water donates at least 1% of their revenue to environmental non-profits. They work with partners like Oceanic Global to promote ocean conservation, education, and plastic reduction.

About the Brand
Open Water
Founders Nic and Jess spent their summers playing watersports at the lake and in the ocean. As they grew up, they realized plastic bottled water is a problem, but the industry keeps growing despite the wide availability of sustainable alternatives like reusable bottles and refill stations. For them, they needed a more pragmatic solution, so they set out to start a bottled water company that was different. They launched in 2014 and have eliminated the need for over 20 million plastic bottles.

Its just water
I understand the absurdity of paying for water that is abundantly available for free on tap, but like most I have succumbed to the convenience (laziness) of pre-packaged grab-and-go water. In trying to reduce the plastic waste that is the byproduct of my laziness, I've been trying products with different packaging. This Open Water by Hive is exactly what it says it is: water. It doesn't taste like a can because there's a thin plastic ring around the neck of the bottle. I will be able to reuse these handy containers multiple times before recycling them. My only complaints are the price ($2/can is too much), and fact that the product that is intended to reduce plastic waste arrived wrapped in plastic! Really?!?
