A Dozen Cousins

This Trinidadian recipe is traditional Indian curry with a regional twist, and it's drowning in flavor. Creamy chickpeas are a perfect base for musky turmeric, fresh-tasting cilantro, and much, much more.

Sustainable goodness

A Dozen Cousins is helping families eat better with nutritious, Black- and Latino-inspired recipes and support for food security.

Why we love it

Comfort foods are known for being nostalgic, indulgent, and easy-to-make, but we think it’s even more comforting when they’re bursting with high-quality ingredients and fantastic flavors. Each spoonful of this mild Trinidadian recipe yields soft chickpeas that pop on your tongue, followed by a rich curry made with onion, ginger, and complex, citrusy cardamom.

How it does good

Food made good for the good of all people

Food might not be created equal, but it isn’t distributed equally either. Communities and families all over the U.S. are unable to access the nutrients and high-quality ingredients they need due to limitations on budgets, free time, food education, and outdoor space. A Dozen Cousins knows the risks associated with these issues, including diabetes and diet-related illnesses, and they believe good, healthy food should be available to all people, regardless of location or income level. By offering plant-based, non-GMO ingredients at a lower price point, they’re making food more affordable and easier to find. They also offer annual grant support and volunteer their time to help out communities and unlock the gates to better food for everyone.

  • supporting key causes

Every year, A Dozen Cousins donates funds and time to a non-profit trying to close the health gap in the US. In 2019, they partnered with The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre to teach fifty families about nutritious, budget-friendly meals from their own cultures. By making traditional Black- and Latino-inspired products, they're bringing African, Spanish, and Indigenous dishes to the forefront.
  • responsible sourcing

You’ll recognize everything on A Dozen Cousins’ ingredient lists, and you can be sure it's all plant-based, non-GMO, and naturally gluten-free. They nix artificial flavors and swap them for nourishing, high-quality, and authentic recipes.

About the Brand

A Dozen Cousins

A Dozen Cousins

Growing up, founder Ibraheem Basir's kitchen was a melting pot of Creole, Caribbean, and Latin American cooking. As he got older and learned the importance of eating naturally, he hated that it was so hard to find convenient foods that were both healthy and authentic. He started A Dozen Cousins, inspired by his daughter and her 11 cousins, so that it would be easier to enjoy authentic cultural recipes made with wholesome ingredients. Today, A Dozen Cousins is on a mission to eliminate socioeconomic health disparities in the US.

Not bad. Good on Rice.

I thought this would be a little bigger, so I could share it with my husband. However, this is an individual portion. It was easy to heat up and tasted pretty good. Definitely smells strong. I ate it on top of rice!

Yum - quick and easy for the kids, too!

My pre-teen likes curry - but not spicy. This was *flavorful*! Since it's chickpeas there is already protein; in this packaging it's super easy for my son to get it himself - from shelf, to heat and eat, and even store the rest in the fridge. We'll be ordering it again - and I'm sure he'll chose it for lunches or snacks - which means I won't be using it for an easy dinner meal! :)

Quick Meal Solution

I'm part of the buying group at Hive and one of our great discoveries was A Dozen Cousins. This chickpea curry is a great super-quick meal solution. Sear your protein of choice with some onions and other veggies (I like collard greens and zuc), add the curry and you're good to go!
