How it does good

Nuts for nuts, bees, and saving water

The truth is, nuts use up a lot of water: it takes one gallon of water to grow a single almond. That’s why Barney Butter ensures that their almond farmers and suppliers practice the most advanced drip and spot irrigation systems that use only as much water as each tree needs. Irrigation is scheduled based on factors like soil or weather conditions to maximize the yield and quality of the almond while minimizing negative impacts on the environment. In fact, their primary grower successfully reduced water waste by 20% through recycling, orchard pruning management, and utilizing both almonds and almond skin.

  • responsible sourcing

A big supporter of local farms, Barney Butter purchases 100% of their almonds from local growers in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. Their suppliers use only micro-irrigation, a technique which only uses as much water as needed per almond tree. The organic cane sugar in many of their butters is sourced domestically through Florida Crystals, a company committed to sustainable growing practices. The small amount of natural palm fruit oil they add is sustainably sourced from Malaysia.
  • low carbon footprint

Barney Butter takes almond skins left behind from their blanching process and recycles them into local livestock feed as a healthy replacement for alfalfa.
  • supporting key causes

Barney Butter understands that almonds wouldn’t be able to thrive without the hard work of honey bees. In support of biodiversity and the Xerces Society, a non-profit environmental organization working to protect our pollinators, Barney Butter is dedicated to bringing you delicious products that are also sustainable and responsibly produced.

About the Brand

Barney Butter

Barney Butter

The tale of Barney Butter starts with a nutty love story. For Dawn and Steve Kelley, it all began with a blind date that turned into a shared dream for “making something positive for the world” and a splash of serendipity. Since becoming a reality in 2008, the power couple-backed company has prided itself in sourcing 100% of their almonds from local growers and reducing the amount of carbon waste they produce in the process. Setting themselves apart from their competitors, they take the extra step to taking the skin off their almonds (a.k.a. blanching), resulting in an ultra-smooth and creamy almond butter that people can't get enough of.
